Mothership Zion – The New Jerusalem
– City of the Saints

What is heaven? The Bible says that God has gone to prepare us a place where we can dwell with Him forever. What does that mean?

To most Americans, heaven is an etherial plane or place of existence where good men go when they die. Its location is a mystery and its description is far too glorious for anyone to try to explain. All we know is that it’s “up there” somewhere.

The Bible, however, refers to heaven as being three distinct regions. First, it refers to the area directly around our planet: our atmosphere. Satan is the ruler of this region.

Second, is the place where the faithful reside: an actual self-contained city built by God.

Third, is the “third heaven” that Paul refers to in II Corinthians, Chapter 12. The third heaven is called paradise and is a place apparently somewhere in deep space. This third heaven is also what many refer to when they speak of heaven as being out in the distant galaxies: the heavenlies, as it were. It is the location in deep space where all the spirits of the Saints dwell in the presence of Christ and it’s where the city of God (the Second Heaven) is currently located.

We shall deal with the second heaven in the following pages, and examine the actual place that I like to refer to as “space station Jerusalem.” What does the Bible call this giant, self-contained city of the Saints?

God’s Tabernacle

We do know one thing for sure. The heaven where the faithful will live for eternity is a place where they’ll dwell in the presence of God. There will be no more pain, death or sorrow. It’ll be a place of eternal joy and happiness:

REVELATION 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Mount Zion: God’s Holy Mountain

The prophet Zechariah called the place the “holy mountain of the Lord:”

ZECHARIAH 8:3 Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain.

[Underlines added for emphasis]

The “Thick Darkness”

Solomon was instructed that God dwells in “the thick darkness.” Somewhere inside of this thick darkness is a place where the LORD is preparing permanent dwellings for His faithful:

I KINGS 8:12 Then spake Solomon, The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

13 I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever.

The “Thick Cloud”

What is this “thick darkness” that Solomon spoke of? Moses was also approached by God in a “Thick Cloud:”

  EXODUS 19:9 “…Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud…”

When Moses later recalled the experience he spoke of this same thick cloud as follows:

DEUTERONOMY 4:11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. [Underlines added for emphasis]

From this description we realize that both Moses and Solomon were speaking about an object that was thick and dark like a mountainous rock, but also glowed in the dark like molten rock or fire.

Two Separate Mountains

Mountains carrying God, therefore, are mentioned in several places in the Bible. The thick cloud or mountain of God that visited Moses, however, was not the same as mount Zion. To make that clear to us, Paul wrote the following passage to his Christian friends instructing them as to where their resurrected spirits would go after their deaths:

HEBREWS 12:18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

22 But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem and to an innumerable company of angels,

23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

[Underlines added for emphasis]

The heavenly Jerusalem, called mount Zion, is different than the large space vehicle that Moses and his people saw. It’s a place where Jesus (the firstborn Son of God) and His Church reside. Those who have believed in Christ including all of God’s covenant people, from the time of Adam on, who have been judged worthy will live alongside of an innumerable host of angels. Sounds like my kind of neighborhood!

The New Jerusalem

The prophet John was informed that the giant city where God dwells is called the “New Jerusalem” and that some of those who are accepted into its gates will go no more out.

REVELATION 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. [Underlines added for emphasis]

An interesting point is the fact that God will “write” His new name (for you) and the name of the city, along with His own name, on those who dwell there. Sounds like the idea of angels wearing insignias or clothing with symbols on them is not totally unthinkable.

Another key instruction within this verse is that the New Jerusalem will “descend” out of heaven (meaning the sky above) and presumably rest near the Earth’s surface.

The Bride Of Christ

John further proclaimed that it will be a beautiful sight to behold when it descends upon the Earth in all its glory:

REVELATION 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

When the “Bride of Christ” is mentioned in Scripture, it is referring to this magnificent city, along with all its inhabitants.

Big Enough For Everyone

The Bible goes even further with its description of heaven. We are given its actual size and shape. In Revelation, John reveals that the city is shaped like a cube, or four-square:

REVELATION 21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth; and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

A furlong is one-eighth of a mile, so the city is 1,500 miles square. To give you an idea just how large that is, the tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest. Its height is 29,028 feet or roughly 5 ½ miles above sea level. It actually rises just over 4 ½ miles above Katmandu, Nepal, the beginning point of most climbing expeditions. The sight is spectacular from Katmandu as Everest’s jagged snow-capped peaks rise majestically into the clouds.

Can you imagine a mountain over three hundred times as high? If Zion were floated down to Earth into a position just a few miles overhead, the base of the gigantic superstructure would fill the entire sky from horizon to horizon!  It’s no wonder the Bible says the people of the Earth will fear at the sight of it.

It’s difficult to visualize something this large but I’ll try to paint you a mental picture. If it were centered over the city of Jerusalem in Israel, it would cover all of Israel, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Turkey, most of Saudi Arabia and Greece and parts of Libya, Sudan, Iran and Russia. Its borders would extend on its northern side from the edge of Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, across the northern boundaries of Turkey to the southern edge of Russia. Its eastern border would go from the northern edge of Iran south to the southern borders of Saudi Arabia.

On its southern side it would cut across the northern border of Sudan and the edge of Chad. Up through Libya and north to the center of Greece; the massive structure would complete its Western front.

But, of course, that’s just what its base would cover: 2,250,000 square miles. Remember, it’s as tall as it is wide: 1,500 miles. The Bible says it has twelve separate levels…and who knows how many sub-levels? If divided equally, each of the twelve levels would be 125 miles apart. If you lived in any of these levels there is the possibility that it would appear much like it does in Earth’s atmosphere today. It’s doubtful you would be aware that you were enclosed in a super structure because of its size and because of the light emanating from the layer above (explained next). Each level’s atmosphere would extend upward 125 miles.

By comparison: our own stratosphere, which contains all our clouds, extends only 12-15 miles up. Our highest manned jet flight (the X-15) only flew to a height of 67 miles. It would be a very spacious feeling to live in the New Jerusalem, and of course the sights God has planned must be spectacular!  Jesus said the angels are busy building mansions in heaven for its future inhabitants. As a believer, that ought to excite you more than a little!

If you could cut a swath around the diameter of the Earth a mile wide and a half-mile high, you would have to go around our planet five hundred and sixty-eight times to create as much space as the New Jerusalem contains. We’re talking BIG! Spacious and, no doubt, opulent surroundings for untold billions of people. And, of course, the universe will be the playground of its inhabitants, many who will likely crew their own HFOs to other worlds and be keepers of God's infinite creations. I'm excited, how about you?
